The Alaska Reads Newsletter, sent out on May 19, highlighted LYSD and our efforts in attendance and engaging welcoming classrooms.

A visit to the Lower Yukon School District is never just a site visit. It is a reminder of what dedication looks like when it is tested by distance, weather, and the realities of rural Alaska.

With no roads connecting these villages and everything arriving by small plane, the educators here operate with a level of resourcefulness and commitment that is nothing short of remarkable. During our recent Department Reading Program visit, we had the privilege of seeing that commitment in action across both schools.

Attendance is a known challenge in remote communities, and both schools are addressing it creatively through student bucks, reward systems, and a culture of recognition that extends to the teachers themselves, because when staff feel valued, students feel it too.

Inside the classrooms, we found structured, welcoming learning environments where clear expectations and strong classroom management created the kind of calm, focused energy where real learning happens. Across every K-3 classroom at both sites, literacy environments reflected the science of reading, with anchor charts, word walls, and foundational skill supports woven naturally into the spaces where students spend their days.

Perhaps the most lasting impression was the heart behind it all. We were fortunate to be there during the Spring Carnival, where teachers volunteered their evening to open the school to families, filling the building with games, laughter, and the kind of genuine community connection that no curriculum can manufacture. Outside, kids zipped along the boardwalks on bikes, soaking up the spring sunshine now that the snow had finally cleared, pure joy in motion.

Most importantly, the educators at both schools demonstrated a sincere commitment to their own professional growth and learning. They engaged thoughtfully in reflective conversations, expressed a genuine desire to deepen their instructional practice, and showed the kind of openness to coaching and collaboration that is the hallmark of truly effective teachers.

These schools face real challenges; however, we witnessed educators deeply invested in their students, continuously striving to grow, and showing up for their communities every single day.
